In these times, a luxurious tropical vacation is just not something you can pull off on a whim. But don’t despair: if you can’t go on holiday, let the holiday come to you, and redesign your resting space to be a calming oasis of luxury. The feel you want to go for is high class but comfortable — like a room in one of those famously grandiose hotels. We’re here to help you make your home into a sanctuary with our simple but life-changing tips.
Plush texture
The skin feel of soft, gentle textures goes a long way in making you believe you’ve landed in the lap of luxury. Take a page from the Plaza’s playbook and set your bedroom up with cosy, snuggly, plush textures. Think throws, blankets, cushions, but also curtains or seating in comforting, rich materials like satin or velvet.

More is more
The more, the merrier! At least when it comes to luxurious accents. Think you have enough candle holders or cushions? Think again! Go all out — this is you, designing your luxury retreat, after all. Invest in some wallpaper with pedigree and character, a gorgeous, plush rug, or more, and when in doubt, you can never go wrong with a beautiful vase of fresh flowers. Always remember: luxury is over the top for a reason.

Mood lighting
The easiest and most essential aspect of getting the mood right is with the lighting: an ornate standing lamp in the reading nook (you definitely need one of those), some elegant, sophisticated wall lights… opt for multiple sources of gentle, diffuse light, rather than a single, brash source. It’s also important to go for lightbulbs with a warm glow, not cold lights that are draining on the eyes and anything but calming or luxurious. Lights also benefit from surfaces that reflect them: think a statement mirror, a twinkling chandelier, or furniture with glass or metal elements.

Seductive colours
Luxury requires some determination. If you want to wake up in the luxury retreat of your own making, you’ve got to make some bold style choices. Pick deep, seductive colors: passionate reds, dignified purples, royal blues or mysterious emerald greens. Choose a statement colour and paint a wall with it, bringing it back throughout the space on lamp shades, deco or textiles. And don’t forget: diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but gold is the marker of true luxury. Good thing it goes with any colour, and has virtually endless uses, from the doorknobs through grand picture frames to small accents on your bedroom furniture.
