Nestled within a traditional baroque village in the south of Italy, Villa Cardo may look unassuming when viewed by passers-by, but this Mediterranean villa houses within a rather modern, 21st century aesthetic.
Modelled on traditional architecture, this three-bedroom holiday home designed by Andrew Trotter is a true haven from the hustle and bustle of modern life, allowing visitors to relax and revel in the beauty of the Pugliese countryside.
The home was built using traditional Pugliese methods of construction, incorporating local materials seen throughout the area and made famous by the iconic Trulli, traditional rounded stone houses designed to increase airflow and keep homes cool and airy within the area’s hot summer months.
Architect Andrew Trotter was commissioned by the homeowners after they visited his nearby project Moroseta, which similarly showcases his calm, simple take on architecture and marries local traditional practice with a modern aesthetic. The couple assigned Trotter to design a similar space upon their land in Carovigno and what ensued was a soothing, harmonious home in which time seems to stand still.
A true escape
Nestled within a full hectare of land filled with olive and almond trees, and sporting sea views from its roof terrace, this home not only pays homage to its surrounding in its architecture but allows guests to truly take in the beauty of Puglia. Not only does the residence itself boast a large living room, four bedrooms and four bathrooms, but the plot also houses an old “lamia” country house with additional sleeping space, a thoughtfully designed lap pool complete with BBQ, wood-fired oven, outdoor space to entertain and even a cinema hall on the lower floor.
The gorgeous white town of Ostuni is close by, allowing for excursions from this Italian hideaway, and while the home was designed for its Italian owners, it has been opened up to the public and welcomes tourists from across the world.
