DESIGN TALK: NONA

Design Talk means time to meet the face behind a brand. Today we make time to get to know Charlotte Matthys of NONA. This innovative drinks maker brings the complexity of herbs and botanicals into the non-alcoholic market, allowing everyone to enjoy sophisticated flavours.

Many of us have experienced this problem: wanting to enjoy time with friends or celebrate an occasion but looking for a non-alcoholic drink that’s a little more special than a mocktail, soda or water. Enter: the complex flavours of NONA June.

Charlotte grew up near Ghent and spent much of her childhood in nature, often experimenting with making teas using herbs found in the fields around the home. After studying bioscience engineering with a major in food technology, she was out for after-work drinks with friends when she realised that the mocktails and other non-alcoholic drinks on offer just weren’t up to the standard of spirits.

After experimenting with herbs and botanicals in her living room, enlisting the help of chefs, bartenders and gin fans and testing for a year, the innovative NONA June was created. Named after the Latin word for nine, NONA uses nine botanicals to make up the gin alternative, with June referencing the juniper berry that gives traditional gin its sophisticated flavour. Now available in some of the best restaurant and bars in five countries – and especially across Belgium – NONA June has become a roaring success.
