Design Talk: glerups

Hygge-proof: natural felt slippers

Design Talk means time to meet the face behind a brand. Today we make time to get to know Nanny of the Danish brand glerups. In 1993 Nanny felted a pair of boots for the first time, and the wool came from her own Gotland sheep. The felted boots were well received among friends and family, so well, that Nanny started a small hobby production. This paved the way for the company glerups.

Started from two pairs, now they’re here

In the beginning Nanny could only felt two pairs of boots a day. Since then, Nanny and her husband Ove have worked hard in order to develop and improve the product and production technology. Several machines have been invented and discarded, making glerups capable to keep up with demand of “addicted” customers worldwide.

The classic grey felt boots have functioned as the prototype for developing new product designs to their collection. They are still using 100% new wool for socks, while the soles are either of calfskin or natural rubber. glerups wants to manufacture the best shoes of felt in the world. This must be done with consideration for both man and nature, so customers can buy products without remorse.

Fresh air and Danish trees as inspiration

The glerups headquarter is situated in the Northern part of Denmark – on the country side with fields, trees and fresh air. The headquarter is also Nanny and Ove’s home – and as glerups has grown throughout the years, it has been a part of the journey to re-build, redecorate and expand the office facilities. Actually today, the new warehouse building is on the field, where Nanny used to have her own Gotland sheep. They treasure the lovely surroundings of their headquarter, and find inspiration and energy in the fresh and natural environment.
