New Orleans’ newest luxury boutique hotel draws on the city’s multicultural history and mythology, uniting the city’s famous Southern hospitality with unconventional, playful design.
The former City Hall Annex certainly looks a treat from the outside, and recently its interiors have been newly reimagined, giving the formerly bureaucratic building new life. Now a gloriously eclectic space, which feels both homey and warm but fresh and new, Maison De La Luz invites both guests to stay in its luxurious suites and the public to enjoy its vibrant new bar. Atelier Ace’s first big foray into luxury properties, this boutique hotel was designed in collaboration with design firm Studio Shamshiri. And this project surely does make a statement.

Nominated for this year’s AHEAD Americas hospitality awards, Maison De La Luz is a stunning example of bringing together diverse design elements and creating eye-catching features around every corner. Designed to feel like a residential space, as if hotel guests were staying in someone’s grand home, the space plays on New Orleans’ different spiritual influences and the play between light and dark that one experiences while moving through the city.
Featuring plenty of rebirth iconography, the designers were inspired by, and reinterpreted, many of the symbols of the city. From local artwork and snakes and eggs referenced in the space to signify rebirth, to 1920s elements that remind of the city’s rich culture, such as at the concierge desk as one enters the space.
Light and dark
While the communal spaces and walkways have a dimmer tone, making them feel warm and cosy and inviting visitors to open dialogue with others, the palette in the rooms is rather different. With the hectic personality of the city outside, Studio Shamshiri turned its focus to a more neutral colour palette, keeping these spaces rather minimal and paired back, creating a space in which to relax and recover after a day in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city.
The distinctive guesthouse aims to find beauty in the curious and unexpected while providing a truly luxurious respite. With 67 suites available, as well as its many private sanctuaries, not only does Maison De La Luz look an absolute treat, but its top-tier service will surely cement it as one of New Orleans’ top stays, no matter what brings you to The Big Easy.
