We love design that makes the world a better place and that looks great too. The Danish design label Mater combines these two ideas beautifully. On Decovry.com we now present to you Mater’s Ocean Collection.
The objective of Mater is to rethink our current practices and create ethical and sustainable design that minimises adverse social and environmental impacts.
“Let’s clean up the planet!”. That was the starting point for Danish design label Mater making its Ocean Collection. “We teamed up with the only fishnet waste upcycling facility in the world, conveniently placed at the western coastline of Denmark”, Henrik Marstrand, founder of Mater says.
“A new innovative business model motivates fishermen across the world to send their used fishnets to the facility, paying them a fair value for this used material, rather than the used fishnets being dumped into the sea”.
The result is The Ocean Collection, characterised by its light structure with repeated slats and metal frames, combined into new modern chairs and tables. The furniture is made of used fishnets, hard plastic waste and a light metal frame. ‘Ocean’ represents sustainable and innovative thinking and was awarded Wallpaper* Magazine’s Design award in early 2019.
Curious about the result? Here are some images of the Ocean Collection.
